Africa
Hi! I’m from South Africa and right now it’s absolutely terrifying here. There is a massive gender-based violence (GBV) problem and nothing is being done about it. The president and SAPS (South African Police Service) do not care at all and we have been told by SAPS to “take extra precautions” rather than actually doing something about the crimes. Women should not have to take extra precautions, men should stop raping and killing women. 7 bodies of women have been found in Kempton Park which is near Johannesburg. I live in Gqeberha (aka Port Elizabeth) and here recently multiple women have been raped and murdered, left to die on the side of the street with nobody being arrested or charged. It’s especially such a big concern to me that people within the poorer areas, what we call townships, aren’t being represented in this. It’s only reported on if it’s a white woman or a wealthy black woman. Obviously the violence has never stopped but it’s spiked so highly recently, and I’m quite honestly terrified for my life and for the lives of my friends.
Since nobody cares about this here, and nobody is doing anything, I’d highly appreciate it if you spoke about this issue on /Africa. I want as much light shed on this issue as I can possibly get, it needs to be spoken about on a global level.
